HOLY FLUX!

Rituals for Deconsecration

This project by The Packet invites artists to reconsider what is held to be sacred in the contemporary and asks them to imagine rites of deconsecration that rupture notions of the sacred and reconstruct it instead, as rites performed from the margins.

Deconsecration refers to the process by which an authority reverses the holy status of a place, object, or entity. It involves the removal or negation of spiritual significance, through rituals or actions, performed in response to what is perceived to be cracks and fissures in the sacred. This suggests that the very definition of what is ‘sacred’ is up for contestation. Deconsecration therefore, is an attempt at cementing power; wherein an institution proclaims its right to deem that which is holy and that which is profane. Does the act of deconsecration however, truly dissolve the sacred, or merely unveil its fragile foundation?

This is a project that requires engagement. We encourage you to chance upon it any time of the day!
