Goa’s Other Worlds—this exhibition of archival photographs and related presentation, derives from UCLA professor Anjali Arondekar’s monumental work on the Gomantak Maratha Samaj, the spectacularly talented and influential devadasi community which moved from Goa to colonial Bombay, to produce the greatest Hindustani musicians of the modern era (i.e. Kesarbai Kerkar, Kishori Amonkar) as well as Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar (as well as Arondekar herself). The transition from temple to concert stage brought myriad other changes, in an intensely documented yet unknown history, that Goa selectively embraces and denies at the same time.
