Beneath Our Feet: Speculative Writing with the Living Earth

It’s easy to forget that soil is a part of our food system. While dirt might not be present on the plates we make, serve and eat, eating is, as Wendell Berry reminds us, an agricultural act.
In this creative writing workshop, we’ll turn our attention toward dirt, soil, and land. Together, we’ll explore how soil carries memory, holds histories of extraction and regeneration, and offers speculative futures. Participants will be guided through generative exercises designed to spark both personal and imaginative approaches to soil storytelling. We’ll draw from sensory memory, ecological observation, and speculative leaps—writing from our own relationships with soil as well as from invented or future-oriented perspectives. Whether you’ve grown a garden, dug your hands into unfamiliar ground, or simply walked across a patch of earth, you already carry soil stories with you. This workshop creates space to unearth them, reshape them, and share them in community.
Come ready to get your hands dirty on the page.
