Diorama, the word originally comes from the Greek roots di (through) and orama (that which is seen, a sight). Its use, meaning "a small-scale replica of a scene," dates all the way back to 1902.
Dioramas have since their inception been an incredible tool for learning. When introduced to museum going audiences, it helped lay people (especially children) understand contexts and conditions such as climate, environment and habitat. It also produced our earliest understanding of natural histories, ecology and (later) Urbanism. It was soon adopted as a tool in city planning and architecture, forensic studies and science, theatre and puppetry.
Sahil Naik started using the potential of the diorama deriving from all these inter-related fields to produce workshops for children that focused on plays of imagination and observation to develop their cognitive skills and awareness, an archival instinct, and their sensitivity to place and change. Two dominant themes of ecology/nature and city/home became evident as these workshops developed.
Dioramas are a fascinating, hands-on way for kids to bring their favourite sights and stories to life.
