A terracotta coil workshop focused on creating shapes involves guiding participants through the traditional process of coil building, where long, snake-like coils of clay are rolled and stacked to build up sculptural or functional forms. Participants will learn to prepare coils with even thickness, attach them securely to bases using scoring and slip, while learning the techniques for stacking, joining, and blending coils in various directions to create a wide range of shapes—from pots to freeform sculptures.
The workshop will also introduce methods for refining and shaping pieces using tools and hand-building tricks like the compression pinch, paddle and anvil, and pushing out forms from the inside to achieve round, flared, or asymmetric structures. Participants may choose to leave visible coil textures or smooth surfaces, adding decorative details for personalized creations.
